Chapter 8 reminds me of the movie Taken. At the beginning of the chapter, Le Ly learns of prostitutes. Le Ly learns that old women recruit young girls and offer them jobs. The old women teach the young girls what they are supposed to do, and then invite young men into the homes to see the girls. In the movie Taken, a teenage girl goes on a trip to Paris with her best friend. As soon as they arrive in Paris, the girls make many bad decisions especially staying alone in a large apartment. The girls are abducted and forced into a prostitution ring where they are drugged almost until death.
On Le Ly's trip back to Vietnam in 1986, Le Ly and her older brother, Bon Nghe, discuss the war and the affects of the war on Le Ly's family as well as other families. Bon Nghe warned Le Ly not to return to their home village of Ky La because Le Ly was once an enemy there and people there might still think she is an enemy. Le Ly has numerous similar conversations with people that she had with her brother. Le Ly realizes, in a conversation with Anh, a chiasmus "the more things change, the more they stay the same" (219).
Hi Laura! I loved the quote you used to end your blog! You did a really good job describing the events that took place during each chapter and I really enjoyed reading your blog! I hope your summer is going well and I can't wait to see you again at school! :)
ReplyDeleteLaura, I loved this post. I have never personally watched this movie but after your explanation, I would love to watch it. The way Le Ly learned about this was interesting and this subject would be something I would like to learn about. Thanks (:
