After Le Ly and her mother are removed from Lien and Anh's house, they go to Lan's house as Anh is not sending Le Ly her promised money and board. Le Ly begins to question her faith after her incident with Anh. Le Ly believes all her hope of a new life without war is crushed when she found out she was pregnant. Catholics, I believe, can be the same way. Something tragic and upsetting can happen to a person and suddenly they loose faith or sometimes grow stronger. I believe that Le Ly grew a stronger faith because she lost it when she was at a low spot in her young life. Catholics, Christians, Buddhists, and other beliefs all go through times like this. Some come out with more faith, while others can completely loose faith.

When Le Ly's mom goes to Lan, Le Ly's sister, to see if there is a place for Le Ly, Lan is reluctant to have Le Ly as a guest. At the same time, Le Ly's father became depressed where he was suicidal, seeing hallucinations, and drinking heavily. Her father went to see Lan and he decided his life was not worth living without his family.
Le Ly is allowed soon allowed to stay with Lan as long as she worked as the housekeeper as well to pay for her food and board.
While with her sister, Le Ly has he baby whom she names Hung and she begins selling her handcrafts to American GI's. After working hard and earning enough money, Le Ly is able to search and find a house for her mother, her son, and herself to live in. Le Ly's life of working for others was seemingly coming to an end where Le Ly could enjoy her independence. From this independence, Le Ly is nearly arrested and remembers an
adage "Tranh nha nguoi le dung get nha nguoi lun, which meant Don't sign contracts with the cross-eyed; don't get short changed by a short man" (189). Le Ly instead ignored this old saying and warning and kept her interactions up with the men she was selling goods to.
