In the third chapter of the memoir of Le Ly Hayslip, violence became central around the young Le Ly. She became an aid to the Viet Cong in their fight against the Republicans. Le Ly is given a few jobs to aid the Viet Cong but had to act as if her loyalty remained with the Republicans as well in order to avoid punishment. One of Le Ly's responsibilities was to make and deliver first aid kits to Viet Cong soldiers staying in Ky La. Republicans and Americans came into the village as Le Ly was at a neighbors house delivering kits. She hid in the house as she heard the soldiers firing at each other. This reminded me of Anne Frank when the soldiers came to inspect the building her family was hiding in. She was terrified and worried that they would find them and she could do nothing about it but sit and wait quietly.
Le Ly went to work in the fields one day. Feeling suspicious, the Republicans arrested Le Ly and interrogated her with many rhetorical questions such as "'What's this?' Loi asked sarcastically, 'Our hero Miss Ly is afraid to die?'" (92). Le Ly was tortured until she was released by the help of her mother. She returns to her village only to be criticized for being released so quickly. She is raped twice in the same night by two boys who threatened to kill her for conspiring with the enemy.
Laura, I also thought of Anne Frank when I read this chapter of When Heaven and Earth Changed Places. Also, when Le Ly was hiding in the trenches and when she was thought of differently because of where she lived and her race, I remembered Anne Frank.
