When Heaven and Earth Changed Places: Ch. 4 Losing The Way

Chapter four brings about many big changes for Le Ly and her mother. Together, they trek to Danang to find stable work away from their village of Ky La and the Viet Cong. First, staying with friends of her mother, Le Ly spends time with Thai, the son of their hosts. Thai takes Le Ly on a tour of the city where she sees many unusual and new attractions and inventions. To end the night, Thai takes Le Ly to a theater to see a movie. Le Ly was amazed by the movie and the new loud noises coming from the speakers.

The experience Le Ly at the theater made me think of the experience my cousins had with a South Korean exchange student. My cousins took this college exchange student to an Indians game over July Fourth weekend. At the baseball game, my cousin had to explain to Alex, the exchange student, what went on in the baseball game. The game was the first baseball game Alex had ever seen and he was amazed at all the different aspects of the game and was excited for what seemed like the littlest things to me.

Le Ly became uncomfortable at the movie and left. Thai told his parents Le Ly was part of a conspiracy and Le Ly and her mother are sent away. They find a place at the home of Lien and Anh. Here Le Ly found her first love, Anh, who was also her employer. Through Anh's actions, Le Ly has an epiphany on how "ignorant [she] was about love between men and women" (129). Le Ly believed that she would never be able to share love with a man after she was raped the first time. Anh's love and caring of Le Ly allows her to understand that love can happen between a man and herself.

  1. I totally agree with you and think Le Ly experienced an epiphany when she was with Anh. She thought love did not exist because she was raped by the Viet Cong officials earlier in her life, and she was able to overcome that horrible experience through Anh's love.

  2. I think she had an epiphany in this chapter, too. She realized that a relationship did not only have to include financial stability and protection; it could also include love and affection for the other person. I used the term epiphany for Chapter 6 when she realized there could be more than one perspective about the war.
